Screening and risk factors

Screening for PH is indicated according to current recommendations only in specific subgroups of patients or in appropriate patient populations, or in presence of symptoms or physical findings suspect for the presence of PH:

1. Specific subgroups of patients, appropriate patient populations or individuals with predisposing risk factors warrant periodic screening for PH (see table under "Risk factors").

2. Patients in whom there is an index of suspicion of PH based on history, risk factor assessment and physical examination, warrant further evaluation (see table under "Substrate recognition").

3. The most appropriate initial study to evaluate patients in whom PH is suspected is a Doppler echocardiogram (see section on echocardiography).
