Screening

High altitude pulmonary edema

Presently, there is no established screening method for subjects who are thought to be prone to high altitude pulmonary edema. Most of the subjects with a previous episode of high altitude pulmonary edema have stronger hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction but its predictive value is weak, because of a large variability (Yagi et al., 1990, Hohenhaus et al., 1995). The hypoxic ventilatory response tends to be lower in high altitude pulmonary edema-susceptible subjects, however, it is not an adequate screening method (Hohenhaus et al., 1995).
