The screening examination of choice for suspected pulmonary hypertension is echocardiography, which demonstrates right ventricular and right atrial enlargement and the paradoxic motion of the interventricular septum. Moreover, other possible causes of pulmonary hypertension such as decreased left ventricular function, valvular heart disease or intracardiac shunts can be ruled out.
