Right Heart Catheterization
Right heart catheter studies in high altitude pulmonary edema reveals the non-cardiogenic ethiology of the edema, showing elevated pulmonary artery pressure, and normal pulmonary artery occluded pressure. The analysis of pulmonary artery pressure-decay curve obtained after rapid inflation of the balloon of the pulmonary artery catheter shows that in subjects with high altitude pulmonary edema the pressure in the pulmonary capillaries is above 19 mmHg (Maggiorini et al., 2001).
