L-Arginine

Theoretically, the oral supplementation of L-arginine, the precourser of NO, might improve hemodynamics in pulmonary hypertension. A small trial in 19 patients has demonstrated slight improvement in PAPm of 9 % and PVR of 16 % after one week of L-arginine 5 g/10 kg/weight/day and an improved exercise tolerance compared to placebo (Nagaya et al. 2001). However, is not clear if L-arginine might not have adverse long-term effects due to a potential increase in toxic NO radicals.
